Liver Enzyme Check

💼 What is a Liver Enzyme Test?

A liver enzyme panel is a group of blood tests that help assess the health and function of your liver. It checks for liver damage, inflammation, bile duct issues, and metabolic conditions. These tests are crucial in detecting both acute and chronic liver diseases, even before symptoms appear.

🔍 Who Should Get a Liver Function Panel?

✅ People with fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain, or dark urine

✅ Individuals with history of alcohol use, hepatitis, or fatty liver

✅ People on long-term medications (e.g., statins, anti-TB drugs, steroids)

✅ As part of a routine health screening or annual check-up

AST

  • Aspartate Aminotransferase

  • ⚖️ An enzyme found in liver, heart, and muscles

  • ⬆ High: May indicate liver damage, hepatitis, heart disease, or muscle injury

  • ⬇ Low: Generally not a concern unless associated with malnutrition or kidney disease

ALT

  • Alanine Aminotransferase

  • ⚖️ An enzyme mostly found in the liver

  • ⬆ High: More specific to liver cell damage (e.g., hepatitis, fatty liver, alcohol-related liver disease)

  • ⬇ Low: Not clinically significant alone

ALP

  • Alkaline Phosphatase

  • ⚖️ An enzyme related to bile ducts and bone metabolism

  • ⬆ High: May suggest bile duct obstruction, gallstones, liver tumors, or bone disease

  • ⬇ Low: May be due to protein deficiency, hypothyroidism, or certain genetic conditions

Bilirubin

⚖️ A yellow pigment produced from the breakdown of red blood cells

Direct (Conjugated): Elevated in bile duct obstruction or liver’s inability to excrete bilirubin

Indirect (Unconjugated): Elevated in hemolysis (RBC breakdown), Gilbert’s syndrome

⬆ High total bilirubin: Leads to jaundice; may reflect liver dysfunction or blood cell issues
