Lipid Profile

A lipid profile is a blood test that measures the levels of specific fats in your blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides. It is an essential tool in evaluating your risk for cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke.

🔍 Why is it Important?

Abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels can silently build up plaque in arteries, narrowing them and increasing the risk of heart disease. A lipid panel helps detect issues early so lifestyle changes or medication can reduce risks effectively.

🔢 Who Should Get a Lipid Profile?

✅ Adults aged 20+

✅ People with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or a family history of heart disease

✅ Smokers and those with a sedentary lifestyle

✅ People on cholesterol-lowering medications to monitor response

LDL

Low-Density Lipoprotein - "Bad" Cholesterol

⚖️ Main contributor to plaque build-up in arteries

⬆ High: Strongly linked to heart disease

  • Target: Less than 100 mg/dL (or <70 mg/dL in high-risk individuals)

  • Treatment: Low-saturated-fat diet, statins, weight loss, fiber

Total Cholesterol

⚖️ Total amount of cholesterol in your blood (includes LDL + HDL + portion of triglycerides)

⬆ High: Increases overall cardiovascular risk

  • Target: Less than 200 mg/dL

  • Treatment: Diet change, exercise, statins if high risk

HDL

High-Density Lipoprotein - "Good" Cholesterol

⚖️ Helps remove bad cholesterol from blood vessels

⬇ Low: Increases heart disease risk

  • Target: Greater than 60 mg/dL (the higher, the better)

  • Treatment: Regular aerobic exercise, healthy fats (e.g., olive oil, fish), stop smoking

Triglyceride

⚖️ A type of fat used for energy; excess leads to fat storage

⬆ High: Linked to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, pancreatitis

  • Target: Less than 150 mg/dL

  • Treatment: Reduce refined carbs/sugars, alcohol restriction, omega-3, weight loss, medications (e.g., fibrates)
